POWER defines us

News

15 episodes, 3 thematic series, a dozen or so interlocutors discussing current, scientifically, medically and socially important topics – this is a brief summary of the POWERcast project implemented by the Wroclaw Medical University. The series will be devoted to new technologies, microbiota and the “Speak About Yourself” campaign focused on students’ mental health.

Why POWERcast?

When creating the Strategy of the Wroclaw Medical University, we decided not only to define ambitious goals that we want to achieve, but also to build a university based on values. They were included in the word POWER, which consists of Passion, Courage, Cooperation, Empathy, Reliability.

– I wanted to find and name the values in what scientists from the Wroclaw Medical University do every day. To get to know the most important ones for each of my interlocutors, those that best fit into the research they conduct – explains the initiator of the project, Monika Maziak.

In simple language about important and interesting matters

The podcasts are divided into three thematic series. Each of them touches on an interesting, current and socially important topic.

– These will be conversations about AI, or rather about new technologies in medicine, microbiota, and the “Speak about yourself” campaign, which gave us an exceptionally disturbing picture of the mental health of students from Wrocław and Opole. Each series will consist of five conversations with academic teachers from our university – says Monika Maziak. – We start with AI in medicine, we want to talk about how to educate healthcare system employees for hospitals of the future. The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. hab. Robert Zymliński, prof. WMU, presents his perspective in a very interesting and inspiring way. I think that this conversation should be listened to primarily by young people deciding to start medical studies. We will also focus on combining the world of technology and academia, here Dr. Agnieszka Siennicka, Vice-Dean for Development of the Faculty of Health Sciences, will talk about the role of chance and mutual attraction. What is particularly important to me is that we will show specific examples of solutions that our scientists have already developed in cooperation with technology companies. We have something to be proud of. Dr. Elżbieta Trypka, prof. WMU from the Department and Clinic of Psychiatry, has launched an application facilitating the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. The KID AID project, sponsored by Dr. Kamila Ludwikowska from the Department and Clinic of Pediatrics and Infectious Diseases, is already recognized in the international environment, and the LekRaport application developed with WMU resources in cooperation with the Information Center and the Technology Transfer Center, created by Dr. Artur Owczarek from the Department and Department of Drug Form Technology, aspires to be included in system solutions – announces Monika Maziak. And she adds that each of the interviewees talks about their research in a simple language that is accessible to people outside the scientific or medical community.

The primary goal is to disseminate knowledge

– One of the most important tasks of podcasts, implemented with funds granted by the Minister of Science under the Social Responsibility of Science II Program, is to disseminate knowledge about research conducted by scientists from the Wroclaw Medical University, which is changing the world around us. We want to open the doors of laboratories, eliminate the hermetic language and talk widely about the fact that science is fascinating and translates into our lives. Podcasts are another element of the educational activities consistently implemented by WMU, including the health campaigns Move Your Heart or #Nabieramyodwagi, in which we also used the form of podcasts . We promote scientific publications in a simple way, describing the effects of research. And what is most impressive, we designed the Medical Discovery Center, which will allow you to “touch” medical breakthroughs in a fascinating, interactive way – says Monika Maziak.

Premiere episodes will be presented every 2 weeks on the communication channels of the Wroclaw Medical University.

The guest of the first episode of POWERcast is Dr. Hab. Robert Zymliński, prof. WMU, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and previously the first Vice-Dean for Innovation in the history of the university, physician, cardiologist and academic teacher. From the conversation you will learn:

  • why technology cannot replace the empathy and experience of a doctor
  • What should cooperation between medics and AI and digital tool creators look like?
  • why medical schools are ideal places to test technologies
  • what does ethical implementation of innovations in healthcare mean?
  • how to combine the power of humans and algorithms in patient care
  • what future awaits medicine supported by artificial intelligence
