In the latest edition of the Shanghai Ranking GRAS – Global Ranking of Academic Subject 2024, the Wroclaw Medical University confirmed its strong position as a medical university. In the “Clinical Medicine” category the university took second place.
– The ranking in the area of clinical medicine is of exceptional importance for every medical university. I am very glad that we are able to interest many young doctors in scientific activity, which is not easy in the whole of Europe these days. It is worth emphasizing the interdisciplinary nature of our scientific research, which is primarily the result of cooperation between doctors and the dynamically developing pharmaceutical sciences at our university. The results of the ranking show that it is worth focusing on excellence and consistently implementing the scientific strategy planned several years ago. I am glad that once again WMU confirms its position at the forefront of Polish science – says Prof. Piotr Ponikowski, Rector of the Wroclaw Medical Unversity.
Success in a new category – Human Biological Sciences
For the first time, the Wroclaw Medical University was recognized in the category “Human Biological Sciences”, taking the position 301-400 in the world and ranking first in Poland. In this category, only three Polish universities were ranked: the Jagiellonian University (401-500) and the Medical University of Białystok (401-500). The presence in this discipline is evidence of the developing research strength in the area of biological sciences at the Wroclaw Medical University.
GRAS Ranking – specialization in selected scientific disciplines
The GRAS ranking focuses on assessing universities in individual academic disciplines, indicating those academic centers that stand out in specific areas. The ranking evaluates the disciplines conducted at universities according to five criteria:
- number of scientific publications – assessment of research activity through the number of articles published in a given discipline;
- publication citations – the number of citations assessing the impact and importance of a university’s scientific work;
- international research cooperation – the percentage of publications carried out in cooperation with foreign units indicates the university’s global reach and integration;
- publications in prestigious journals – number of articles in leading journals such as Nature and Science;
- Award-winning scientists – number of employees awarded prestigious awards.
