The Rector of the Medical University of Wrocław, Professor Piotr Ponikowski, was honored with the title of “Scientific Personality of Lower Silesia.” This distinction, awarded for the first time in history, was presented on November 20th of this year during the Grand Business Gala “Lower Silesian Griffin – Economic Award,” held in the departures hall of Wrocław Airport.
The award was granted for his exceptional contribution to the development of clinical cardiology, the building of a strong, internationally recognized heart disease center in Wrocław, and his consistent blend of top-tier scientific research with clinical practice for the benefit of patients in the region and throughout Poland. The jury also recognized Professor Ponikowski’s role as a leader in the academic community and his influence on the Medical University’s position in national and international rankings.
Receiving the award, Professor Ponikowski emphasized that he viewed it as a distinction for the entire Heart Institute team and a recognition of their collective effort.
” This is an award for my team,” Professor Ponikowski said, accepting the award. “We are the thirteenth-ranked cardiology institute in the world—before Oxford and behind Harvard.”
Professor Piotr Ponikowski is an internationally recognized cardiologist, for years ranked among the most frequently cited scientists in the world in the Highly Cited Researchers rankings.
He heads the Institute of Heart Diseases at the Medical University and University Clinical Hospital in Wrocław, developing innovative methods for the diagnosis and treatment of heart failure.
In 2024, he was recognized as the best Polish scientist in the field of medicine by Research.com.
