Over 360 graduates of the Faculty of Medicine at the Wroclaw Medical University received their diplomas. The National Forum of Music hall, where the university organized the ceremony, was filled to the brim not only with young doctors, but also with their families and loved ones. During the event, those who graduated with the best results were also awarded.
The audience was welcomed by Prof. Piotr Ponikowski, Rector of the Wroclaw Medical University, who noted that WMU is not only the best medical school in Poland, but also the best higher education school in the country, as evidenced by the results of the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024. Prof. Piotr Ponikowski also emphasized that the most important thing in a doctor’s work is the patient’s well-being and providing help to the sick and showing them respect regardless of race, religion or financial status. – Let’s see the sick as a person who wants to be heard and noticed – he said, emphasizing that the humanization of medicine is what the university wants to focus on now.
Congratulations and best wishes were also extended to the graduates by Dr. Hab. Robert Zymliński, prof. WMU, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and his long-time predecessor Prof. Andrzej Hendrich, while Dr. Mateusz Mackoś delivered a lecture entitled “A job unlike any other – the humanitarian dimension of the medical profession”.
After the ceremonial taking of the medical oath by former students, Prof. Piotr Dzięgiel, Vice-Rector for Science at WMU presented the Ludwik Hirszfeld Medal. The award for the highest grade point average during studies was given to Zuzanna Drewniak (average 4.9). Asked about the recipe for success during difficult medical studies, she explained that patience, focus and passion for learning are behind it.
Another 54 people who had an average of at least 4.61 were honored with the “Badges for Graduates with Distinction in Academics.”
Later in the meeting, Piotr Cugier, Head of the Admission and Graduate Career Path Monitoring Office of the Wroclaw Medical University, presented Zuzanna Drewniak with the Diploma of the Ambassador of the Wroclaw Medical University. Speeches were given by the starost of the year Agata Boczar and the chairwoman of the Student Government of the Wroclaw Medical University, Bernadetta Żółkowska. In turn, representatives of the International Association of Medical Students IFMSA – Poland Branch Wrocław, the Student Scientific Society, as well as Karol Mirkowski and Aleksandra Stosiek presented their awards.
During the event, alongside the Wroclaw Medical University Choir Medici Cantantes, Natalia Lubrano performed, singing the famous ballad “We are the champions”. The ceremony ended with the traditional throwing of the caps and a group photo.
